Dr. Max Craglia
Institute for Environment and Sustainability Max Craglia joined the JRC in January 2005 to lead SDI activities, especially development of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (INSPIRE). Prior to joining the JRC, Max was Senior Lecturer at the Department of Town & Regional Planning, University of Sheffield. His major research interests there focused on the formulation of geographic information policies to support spatial data infrastructures, and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for policy analysis, needs assessment, resources deployment, and impact evaluation in policy fields such as spatial planning, neighbourhood renewal, and crime reduction. During the last 10 years he coordinated a number of European-wide projects addressing scientific and policy issues relating to the use of geographic information including: the European Science Foundation’s GISDATA scientific programme (1993-1997), the EC funded project on Methods for Access to Data and Metadata in Europe (MADAME) (1999-2001), the EC project on Geographic Information Network in Europe (GINIE). During 2004, Max was principal investigator for one of the ESRC pilot projects on the use of Grid computing for the e-social science (www.shef.ac.uk/~scgisa/escience/home.htm). Max graduated in Civil Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 1981, and proceeded to obtain an MPhil. in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Edinburgh in 1983. In 1993 he obtained a PhD in Urban Planning at the University of Sheffield. Between 1984 and 1989 he was a technical expert in Urban and Regional Planning for the United Nations’ DTCD posted in Riyadh to work with the Saudi Government. In 2003 he acted as Editor of the extend impact assessment of the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE) initiative for the European Commission DG Environment, and in 2005 he joined the JRC to work on the implementig rules of INSPIRE and research its potential impacts. |
